This grey scale value finder appears to be based on accepted principles. It appears the actual grey values displayed are based on the subjective values seen by human eyes, not by some mechanical method of separating them. The device is limited to 10 distinct greys and the user must adjust for the fact that two of them are nominally pure black and white. Pure blacks rarely exist in nature. One measurement I did of the ‘black’ value on a scan of my sample to be produced 4% grey or 96% black. Another attempt using a different combination of equipment produced a value of 7% grey. This shows such measurements are procedure dependent but these values do correspond with some dark colour pencils, paints etc. and such variations should be immaterial when using the scale to evaluate relative values on an artwork.
For interest only, the grey values determined by the most recent exercise were:
VALUE 1 - 4%
VALUE 2 - 20%
VALUE 3 - 33%
VALUE 4 - 48%
VALUE 5 - 60%
VALUE 6 - 69%
VALUE 7 - 78%
VALUE 8 - 87%
VALUE 9 - 96%
VALUE 10 - 100%
Another earlier exercise produced similar but not identical values except for VALUE 10. I suspect subtle shades of white cannot be determined by my equipment.
So most of the above is purely academic but may be of interest to some people. Nevertheless the Gray Scale & Value Finder should be useful for those artists who want to work with 10 shades of grey
