DIY Textured Terracotta Vase Makeover

If you’ve got an old glass or ceramic vase lying around, you can give it a brand-new life with the earthy, warm tones of terra cotta paint. This simple project works on almost any surface and creates the look of handcrafted clay without the need for pottery skills.

Materials Needed: Old vase (glass, ceramic, or even a sturdy plastic jug) FolkArt Terra Cotta Paint in your chosen colour. A small paintbrush or foam brush. Protective sealer (matte finish)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prep the Vase

Wash the vase with mild soap and water to remove dust, dirt, and grease. Let it dry completely. If the surface is glossy, lightly sand it with fine-grit sandpaper to help the paint adhere better.

Step 2: First Coat of Paint

Using your brush, apply the first thin coat of terra cotta paint. The first coat might not fully cover the surface, but that’s fine—it’s just the base layer. Allow it to dry for about 1–2 hours.

Step 3: Add Texture

For a natural clay look, use a textured sponge or stippling brush to apply the second coat. Dab the paint onto the surface in light, random motions. This creates that slightly rough, hand-formed pottery feel.

Step 4: Build Depth with Layers

If you want a richer, sun-baked look, apply a second colour (slightly darker or lighter than your base) using dry brushing. This technique involves dipping your brush lightly in paint, wiping most of it off, and then brushing gently across the surface to highlight the texture.

Step 5: Seal the Vase

Once the paint is completely dry, apply a clear matte sealer. This protects the finish while keeping the natural terracotta look. If the vase will hold water, seal the inside with a waterproof sealant as well.
