Step-by-Step Process

1. Prepare the Fabric

• Wash the fabric to remove sizing or finishes — this helps the dye absorb evenly.
• Keep it damp before starting the binding process.
  

2. Choose a Shibori Technique

Here are three popular styles:

• Fold fabric into squares, then clamp between wooden shapes with rubber bands.
• Gather small sections of fabric, wrap tightly with string or rubber bands.
• Wrap fabric diagonally around a pole, tie securely, and scrunch it down.
  

3. Bind the Fabric

• Use rubber bands, string, or clamps to secure the folds.
• The tighter you bind, the more white (underdyed) space you’ll get in your pattern.

4. Prepare the Dye Bath

• Follow the dye manufacturer’s instructions for mixing.
• For indigo, you’ll need to prepare the vat and let it rest so the dye oxidizes properly.

5. Dye the Fabric

• Submerge your bound fabric into the dye bath.
• For deeper colors, leave it longer or repeat the dipping process.
• Indigo requires removing and exposing the fabric to air between dips to develop the color.

6. Rinse & Reveal

• Once the desired color is reached, rinse the fabric in cold water until the water runs clear.
• Carefully remove the bindings to reveal the pattern.
  

7. Set the Dye

• Wash the fabric with a mild detergent to remove excess dye.
• Let it air dry out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.
